method of physical actions

a method of acting developed by Konstantin Stanislavsky towards the end of his life involving the precise and detailed analysis of particular physical actions, followed by the construction of an organic ‘line of life’. Its detailed elaboration and realisation was to lead to the awakening of unconscious creativity. The method was developed in the final years before Stanislavsky’s death, including during work on Molière’s L’Avare (The Miser; the premiere came in 1939, after the director’s death), which has been described in detail by Vasiliy O. Toporkov. Grotowski became acquainted with the method early on and studied it closely. By 1954 he had already published an extensive and competent study on the subject, while in later years the method became his most essential inspiration, taking a central place in his work from the mid-1970s, i.e. from the time of the Theatre of Sources. He made direct reference to it during the Art as vehicle period. According to Grotowski’s oft-repeated words, his work on the method left off from the point where Stanislavsky ended his work on it, thus the fundamental difference was to be found in the shift from the context of the realistic imitation of everyday actions to work involving energy and organic impulses.
